Restrained Love Viewer

RLV stands for Restrained Love Viewer (formerly known as "Restrained Life Viewer"). This is a special third-party build of the Second Life Viewer that imposes certain controls over your avatar's behavior. It enhances the realism, such as it is, of virtual bondage play.

We encourage prisoners and guards to use RLV.

RLV can prevent you doing these things:

  • change your outfit
  • fly
  • send and receive IMs
  • access maps
  • admin functions
  • hear and speak in text or voice chat
  • stand up
  • teleport
  • see your inventory

You can use the standard RLV viewer, the Cool VL Viewer or the GreenLife Emerald Viewer.

Installing RLV

Get the restrained Love Viewer

Installing RLV on Windows is a bit tricky; you have to move some files around in very specific ways. Follow the instructions that come with the download.

Installing on Mac OS X is very easy. You can keep both versions around independently.

Installing the Cool VL Viewer

The Cool VL Viewer has good rendering, high stability, many extra features and all the RLV enhancements (based on the genuine RestrainedLove patch by Marine Kelley).

Once you have the Cool VL Viewer installed, do Ctrl-P to bring up the Preferences dialog. Click the Cool features tab. Check the Restrained Love checkbox. Quit and restart the viewer.

Installing Emerald

Modular Systems Have the downloads of this viewer. Many people report that as well as RLV support, Emerald also gives a better frame rate and performance than the standard viewer. To get RLV working in Emerald there are a few simple steps. These instructions are for Windows operating systems.

  • Download 2 files from here "GreenLifeSetup_x-xx-xxx.exe(optimised)" and "GreenLife_Proprietary_Pack_Voice-Support-FPS-Boost.exe".
  • Run the setup file, when it completes run the propriety pack file. They install just like any normal program.
  • Open "GreenLife Emerald Viewer" and log in as normal.
  • Open the edit menu, and open "Preferences". From the buttons down the left of the preferences window choose "Emerald".
  • Along the top of the preferences window click on "Misc". Tick the box at the bottom of the list labelled "Enable Restrained Love [RLV] features (requires restart)".
  • Click "OK" and restart the viewer.

Now you just need a HUD, see the instructions bellow.

Get an RLV HUD

You will also need an RLV HUD. You can get one from the locker in Intake. Right-click it and select Attach to HUD. (Anywhere works,)

The new Black Gazza collars under development include a relay. If you use a separate relay, be sure to turn off the relay in the collar.

How it Works

RLV devices attached to your avatar talk to the viewer with commands that start with @. The RLV-enabled viewer watches for that and intercept any message that begins with @. If you have an object attached to your avatar, it can send RLV commands and they are immediately executed. For instance, a pair of handcuffs can force your avatar into a pose where your wrists are bound behind your back.

A relay is an object attached to your avatar, either a HUD or a device like the Black Gazza collar. An external device such as cage or stocks talks to your relay on a special channel. The relay accepts the commands on that channel and speaks them again so the RLV-enabled viewer can hear them. Many current relays have the option of giving you information about the devices, or making choices for you about whether to accept commands from them. For instance, you can set your relay to trust all devices owned by a certain person or the landowner. You can set it to always ask you first (Ask), or never ask you (Auto). Relays generally have a safeword option, so that you can escape if things go awry.

At Black Gazza, there are rules in place for how Tops should behave with RLV-enabled bottoms, so you are generally safe with the Ask or Auto options. On the Main deck where clueless newbies might be present, stick with Ask or Off.

Some RLV toys work with the contents of a folder in your inventory called #RLV. Under certain circumstances, your avatar may be forced to attach or remove objects in thsoe folders. At Black Gazza, three such folder have been established.

  • #RLV/BGInmate - the inmate HUD adds these things to your avatar when you activate it
  • #RLV/BGGuard - the guard HUD adds these things to your avatar when you activate it
  • #RLV/BGVisitor - the inmate HUD or guard HUD removes the items from the other folder and adds these when you deactivate it

Some RLV devices have the option of removing all attachments from an avatar; this has the unfortunate effect of turning a furry into a naked human. This is generally a Bad Idea. If you want to set up a toy at Black Gazza, you must make sure that it does not arbitrarily remove attachments.
